History of the American Postal Worker's Union
The American Postal Workers Union, AFL-CIO, represents 366,000 employees of the U.S. Postal Service who are clerks, maintenance employees, motor vehicle operators, and non-mail processing professional employees. The world's largest postal union, APWU is also the fifteenth largest union in the AFL-CIO.

Postal unions, dating back to the nineteenth century, have gone through a number of transitions paralleling the growth of the former Post Office Department and its transformation into the U.S. Postal Service under the Postal Reorganization Act of 1970. Under the PRA, postal unions first won the right to bargain collectively over wages, hours and working conditions.

The APWU was founded on July 1, 1971, the result of a merger of five postal unions: the United Federation of Postal Clerks, the National Postal Union, the National Association of Post Office and General Service Maintenance Employees, the National Federation of Motor Vehicle Employees and the National Association of Special Delivery Messengers.

Omaha Area Local
Thank you for exercising your right to join the American Postal Workers Union. The Omaha Area Local is the largest local of the APWU in Nebraska, representing over 1,000 members throughout the Metro Area. Our primary mission is to represent our Members in negotiations with postal management regarding the pay, benefits and working conditions of postal workers. The Omaha Area Local is a part of the larger body of the American Postal Workers Union which represents over 360,000 members nationwide. Your Union represents all members of the Clerk, Motor Vehicle, and Maintenance Crafts. The following is intended to be a brief introduction to some of the features, benefits and aspects of the Omaha Area Local.

Member Benefits

Members of the Omaha Area Local receive the benefits of;

(1) the Omaha Post Script, an informative monthly periodical concerning Union issues in the Omaha Installation

(2) free use of our newly remodeled Union Hall

(3) free consultation and advise concerning EEO, OWCP, and MSPB

(4) in the event of a death in the immediate family, a member is entitled to one (1) Bible during the course of his/her career as a member

(5) free attendance at the Local Annual Picnic and Xmas Party

(6) distribution of the Local Update, a Union news bulletin providing timely and relevant Union information and advise

(7) the opportunity to join the organization efforts

(8) eligibility for appointment to offices/committees

(9) the right to participate in General Membership meetings, special Craft votes, and the major Local elections.

There are several programs available only to union members. This includes the Voluntary Benefits Program. There is also an Accident Benefit Plan which pays lump sums for certain types of personal losses.

The most important benefit of Union membership is the right to participate in the democratic process of running our Union. Only Members may attend our Union meetings and have a voice and a vote.

Only Members have the right whether to accept or reject contract offers from postal management.

Only Members have the right to become stewards, to run for office and to vote for our officers in Local and National elections.

Non-Members are just along for the ride (and a free ride at our Members' expense at that!)

We urge our Members to attend all Union meetings of the Local, and to get active by becoming stewards, committee members or running for Union office.

After all, the Union is only as strong as the people who are willing to volunteer to do the very necessary work which is required to fully pursue our contractual and legal rights. We are nothing without members!
